INDIA'S LOCATION -
India is a big and beautiful country. Iti is isthe
seventh largest country in the world in area
and the second largest in population after
China. India has 29 states and 7 union
territories. The shape of India is like a kite.
It is broad in the middle and narrow at the
top and at bottom. India stretches for
about 3,214 km from north to south and
about 2,933 km from east to west.




  The southern part of India is a
peninsula. Tropic of Cancer (23°30')
divides the country into almost two equal
parts.
India is surrounded by sea water on its
three sides. The Arabian Sea is in the West,
the Bay of Bengal is in the East and the
Indian Ocean is in the South.

The state of Jammu and Kashmir is
placed like a crown on India's head.
Kanyakumari is the southernmost tip of
our main land. The length of the coastline of
the land of India is about 7.517 km. India
occupies an important position in South
Asia.

INDIA'S NEIGHBORS - 
India shares its I boundaries with
Pakistan and Afghanistan in the north west,
Chma, Nepal and Bhutan in the north east
and Myanmar and Bangladesh in the east.

The land frontier of India is
15,200km long.

Our southern neighbours
across the sea consist of two
island countries, namely Sri
Lanka and Maldives.
    Sri Lanka is separated 
from India by a narrow
channel of sea formed by the Palk Strait and the Gulf of Mannar.
Maldives islands are situated to the south of the Lakshadw islands.

PHYSICAL DIVISION -

We will study about these physical
divisions and their influence on our day-to-
day life in the next chapters.
The land surface of India is not the same
everywhere. There are hilly regions,
plateau lands, plains and desert lands. The
physical division of India can be grouped
under the following divisions.

1. The Northern Plains

2. The Great Indian Desert

3. The Southern Plateaus

4. The Coastal Plains

5. The Islands Groups

6.The Northern Mountains

We will study about these physical
divisions and their influence on our day-to-
day life in the next part
